From the reviews
I've gotten to train with the instructors of this wonderful school at many seminars across New York over the last 10 years. Their skill and professionalism are world class. If I lived in the area, I'd be spending my time and money training at their new school.
I've trained extensively over the years with Sifu Eric and Sifu Montell, and they are incredible instructors with real passion for martial arts. They foster an environment and culture of mutual respect within the school, and I've always felt both welcome and encouraged to be my best when training with them.
I studied martial arts under these amazing instructors for 5 years while living in Syracuse. They are extremely knowledgeable and empowering! I would recommend this school/family with no reservations!
Water's Edge has everything I could want in a place to train. The instructors are all incredibly knowledgeable martial artists with extensive training and experience. The instructors and more senior students at Water's Edge are as kind and dedicated to helping you with your development as they are to their own.
New to kickboxing? Start at Water's Edge Martial Arts
Water's Edge Martial Arts comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.
Your first kickboxing class at Water's Edge Martial Arts
Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
