From the reviews

Great school, great instructor, and great people. I started training BJJ about 4 years ago with a wrestling back ground and can say my grappling has never been better. Lane Andrews professional approach and ability to articulate clear and detailed instruction makes learning both basic and advanced techniques easy.

★★★★★ — Shawn, Jun 2015

Our family was looking for a BJJ and Muay Thai gym for awhile and we are so grateful to have found South Tampa Jiu Jitsu! The coaches are amazing, the family centered pricing makes it so that everyone can train & I love that all 3 of my kids can take classes at once instead of having to be on site for 3 hours for back…

★★★★★ — K, Apr 2024

I don’t post reviews often, but my 6- and 8-year-old daughters have been coming here twice a week for the past six months, and I have nothing but glowing things to say. They truly have fun while learning so many valuable life skills and it’s been amazing to watch.

★★★★★ — Tarcela, Jan 2026

South Tampa Jiu Jitsu is a great and welcoming place to train for both adults and children. My daughter and I have been training there for 2+ years and it just keeps getting better. Lane, John and the other instructors are top notch and have created a tight knit community where it is a joy to learn.

New to kickboxing? Start at South Tampa Jiu-Jitsu & MMA

South Tampa Jiu-Jitsu & MMA comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.

Your first kickboxing class at South Tampa Jiu-Jitsu & MMA

Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Kickboxing is a contact sport. Warm up, pace yourself, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
