From the reviews
Shout out to the whole crew at Memento Combats Sports and Professor Dan McCarthy for allowing me to drop in for a training session. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, the facility is first class and the training was awesome. If you’re ever in the area don’t pass this place up!
Coach Joe is amazing with the kiddos and has a way of helping them learn the art of the sport in a way they understand. He makes the lesson fun and enjoyable while teaching complex moves. Highly recommend!
My daughter loves learning Jiu Jitsu here. There are lots of kids that train here, and the instructors are excellent with them. I highly recommend Memento!
Wish I could give 10 stars for this gym. Myself, and a group of 8-10 BJJ people traveled from all over as far as Alaska to Australia to train together. When our original host gym fell through, Memento Combat Sports graciously allowed us to drop in to their classes and open mats for the weekend.
New to kickboxing? Start at Memento Combat Sports
Memento Combat Sports comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.
Your first kickboxing class at Memento Combat Sports
Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
