From the reviews

LOVE the school so much. My son, age 5, has been going for 2-3 months now and he absolutely loves it. We visited a few other karate schools prior and you could just feel the difference as soon as you walked in and talked to the instructors.

★★★★★ — Jennifer, Jun 2018

My kids have been attending for close to a year and I can’t say enough about them! They teach character skills as well as martial arts and the instructors are excellent. There are studios out there that aren’t developmentally appropriate for kids but this one is great.

★★★★★ — Carolyn, Mar 2019

I have been lucky enough to be a part of the family of AOMA for 4 years now. My children, now 13 and 10, have learned life skills through classes, camp and family activities associated with the Academy.

★★★★★ — Christine, Mar 2019

My son has been attending classes at AOMA for about a year now and he loves it. The owners, Sensei Cynthia and Sensei Chris are amazing at what they do. They’re very easy to talk to and work with you and your child individually addressing any issues you may have going on at home or school.

New to kickboxing? Start at The Academy of Martial Arts

The Academy of Martial Arts comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.

Your first kickboxing class at The Academy of Martial Arts

Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Kickboxing is a contact sport. Warm up, pace yourself, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
