From the reviews
We've been with Otomi for almost 3 years now. Coach Gonzo is unfailingly welcoming to anyone that walks in the door and unfailingly demanding of anyone that walks on the mat. He will absolutely meet you where you are, but is insistent that you not stay there. Are you trying? Are you reaching?
My son has been training here for the past 8 months, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. From the very beginning, Coach Gonzo made him feel welcome and supported, and it’s been amazing to watch his confidence grow week after week.
My 3 kiddos attend OMA for BJJ and Muay Thai. The coaches are great. I really appreciate what my kids are learning here. The OMA community is welcoming and helpful. This is definitely a family gym. They also offer after school care and camps for an extra fee for when the kids are out of school. Highly recommend!
Our son has been attending classes for about a year and he really enjoys it. The coaches and coach Gonzo are great with the kids! We've been very happy and so glad we found Otomi!
New to kickboxing? Start at Otomi Martial Arts
Otomi Martial Arts comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.
Your first kickboxing class at Otomi Martial Arts
Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
