From the reviews
Most reviews are from people outside the US and just saying they wish to be here. Well I'll be going in tomorrow to see the place for my two kids. I'll update Update. My two kids are now attending four days per week. The coach is hard and I like that because they will learn discipline.
1.) Anyone here complaining that you aren’t receiving a Hollywood welcome when you walk in the door, remember this is a place to train, to fight, to discipline mentally and physically. This place is 100% mindset ready. You want the feel goods? Go to Gracie and basically have your kid get an extended recess.
I am a gym owner in Washington DC. I train professional fighters and I often come to this place with my fighters to prepare for high level fights. The level of instruction is world class and if you live in San Jose you need to take full advantage of the opportunity to train with team that has accomplished so much in…
My 7 yr old has been taking MMA classes here for the last 2 months. He loves it! Coach Wayne is tough but good. The facility is more rundown especially during Covid but the staff is friendly. Most importantly my son is having fun, getting a good workout, learning real fighting techniques and also being disciplined.
New to kickboxing? Start at American Kickboxing Academy
American Kickboxing Academy comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.
Your first kickboxing class at American Kickboxing Academy
Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
