From the reviews

I started training at AZO about a year ago, when I finished college and returned to Kalamazoo. Facilities and instruction are excellent. Huge amount of mat space, plus a raised ring and a smaller mat in the front room. Lots of equipment to work with.

★★★★★ — Anna, Feb 2016

The instructors are some of the best teachers and coaches I've had the pleasure of working with. Everyone is incredibly nice and very enthusiastic. They have a very welcoming and patient atmosphere for beginner's (especially one's with no prior combat training). The classes are very organized and structured.

★★★★★ — James, Nov 2021

The women’s class has a great positive atmosphere. I started going a couple years ago and have made friends while learning how to fight. The coach is always wanting to see her students improve and puts in the extra effort to make sure everyone is improving their skills and having a good time.

New to kickboxing? Start at Alliance AZO Martial Arts Training Center LLC

Alliance AZO Martial Arts Training Center LLC comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.

Your first kickboxing class at Alliance AZO Martial Arts Training Center LLC

Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Kickboxing is a contact sport. Warm up, pace yourself, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
