From the reviews

In a typical Urban Combat class, you will warm up for 30 minutes with a tabata or interval training, followed possibly by punching drills with thai pads and/or focus mitts with a partner. You'll then work on other drills such as take downs, ground grappling, grabs/holds with partners.

Our family moved away from Menlo Park this past month, and I knew I needed to update my review to reflect my experience here. For 8 months I've trained at Urban Combat, and not only can I say that the instruction is stellar, but the people have become like family to me.

Seriously, ladies, take this class. Brian will teach you the basics that EVERY WOMAN NEEDS TO KNOW. We should have learned this stuff when we were five years old, but it's never too late. I took a class with some girl friends today and it's some of the best $ I've ever spent. Just $45 for two hours.

★★★★★ — Laura, Dec 2016

I've been training here for 6 years and I still look forward to each class. Ive done martial arts my whole life (Karate, Boxing, BJJ) and none of them are like Urban Combat. This place is focused on real life and how those arts come together with actual common sense for dealing with potential situations.

Your first kickboxing class at Urban Combat Reality Based Self Defense

Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Kickboxing is a contact sport. Warm up, pace yourself, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
