From the reviews

I just celebrated my 1 year anniversary at Paragon. I'd marveled at jiu-jitsu and been wanting to learn for years - even drove by the place a few times. I didn't have a wrestling or martial arts background, was getting older, and felt a bit intimidated. Joining has been one of the best decisions I've made.

I recently stopped by this gym during my vacation in Santa Barbara and the experience was great. When I first reached out by email asking about the possibility of drop-in just for a few classes, professor Sandoval accepted me in his prompt reply. When I visited the morning class, he and his students were all kind.

★★★★★ — Yasuhiro, Jun 2025

My Grandsons started at Paragon when they were 5 and 6 years old. They train in Jiu Jitsu and boxing and private boxing. The coaches genuinely care about the kids They are very on top of promoting when the kids earn it and address any issues that come up between them.

★★★★★ — Gene, Jun 2016

The best place to train in town. Very beginner friendly and welcoming to guests.

New to kickboxing? Start at Paragon Academy Jiu Jitsu-Boxing-Kickboxing Gym

Paragon Academy Jiu Jitsu-Boxing-Kickboxing Gym comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.

Your first kickboxing class at Paragon Academy Jiu Jitsu-Boxing-Kickboxing Gym

Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Kickboxing is a contact sport. Warm up, pace yourself, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
