From the reviews
Jireh Boxing is transformative. Not only will this gym challenge you physically but mentally as well. Fantastic location with lots of parking. I have trained with Rick and Robert for many years and followed them to this new gym. No matter what level of skill you are Rick and his team will take care of you.
Rick is an awesome instructor, personable and dedicated to getting you active and fit. I get the BEST workout in an hour and it’s such a great way to move and release pent up energy. Welcoming to beginners and experienced people alike. What an awesome addition to the Santa Cruz community!
Excellent Boxing Gym with a well-maintained facility! Has a great vibe and classes are tailored for all levels!
Had a great session yesterday with Rick, a highly experienced martial artist, coach, and fighter with over 30 years in the game. The gym is beautiful — super clean, well-maintained, and has a really positive vibe.
New to kickboxing? Start at Jireh Boxing Kickboxing Cardio and Competition
Jireh Boxing Kickboxing Cardio and Competition comes up as a beginner-friendly gym — noted on their own site. If you've never thrown a punch or a kick, that's exactly who a good beginners class is for. A few things worth knowing before your first week. First, you don't need to be fit or coordinated to start — you get in shape by training, not before it, and coaches scale every drill to you. Second, you won't be thrown into hard sparring — reputable gyms build the basics (stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads and bags) first, and any contact eases in gradually under a coach's control. Third, all fitness levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. Most gyms are happy to let you watch or try a class first, so reach out before you commit.
Your first kickboxing class at Jireh Boxing Kickboxing Cardio and Competition
Nervous about walking into a kickboxing gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics — stance, footwork, and punches and kicks on pads or a heavy bag — not hard sparring. Go at your own pace and rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive trainers. What to bring: water, and hand wraps and gloves if you have them — many gyms lend loaner gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves and wraps (and shin guards once you start sparring). Sparring is optional and eases in gradually, once your basics are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
